This new operating system ushers in a major visual and functional overhaul for Apple, with the release scheduled for 2025 fall.

With the WWDC 20205 ongoing, Apple has unveiled the brand new macOS 26 Tahoe, the new operating system for its MacBook and iMac laptops and desktops. This new operating system ushers in a major visual and functional overhaul for Apple, with the release scheduled for 2025 fall. As per Apple's announcement, macOS 26 will be available on all M-series Mac, which includes Mac Pro, Mac Studio, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, with the beta testing slated for next month.

As per Verge, Tahoe denotes continuity for Apple in that it continues the long tradition of California-inspired names, but with a small change: year-based numbering, which Apple has unveiled across platforms. Tahoe, although launched this year, its life cycle will actually playout through 2026.

A key feature of macOS 26 is the introduction of Apple’s new Liquid Glass design language, which brings a visually dynamic, glass-like aesthetic to the entire interface. Be it the Dock, toolbars to app icons and widgets, every element has been reimagined with translucency, depth, and light refraction. Users can now personalise their Macs further with tinted, colour-matched folders and app icons, echoing the visual coherence introduced in iOS 26.

Under the hood, Apple Intelligence has been made available to power several new features aimed at enhancing productivity and user experience, like Live Translations in the Messages app, Image Playground, Genmoji, and Shortcuts. Another headline addition is the all-new Games App, marking a concerted push by Apple to court gamers on the Mac. The app serves as a central hub for browsing, launching, and managing games, while also facilitating social features such as game invites and chat. Complementing this is the new Game Overlay, offering quick access to settings and communication tools during gameplay.

While macOS 26 Tahoe may not turn Macs into gaming powerhouses overnight, Apple’s latest update signals its intent to unify design, intelligence, and play under one sharply crafted glass surface.

Earlier today, Apple during the WWDC announced a historic overhaul of its design UI, the first since iOS 7, a change experts have spoken about for a while. However, Apple did also admit that work on the new Siri update is ongoing and pushed the same for next year.
