Volkswagen is developing a sub-₹10 lakh compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) for the Indian market, with plans for an India-first global debut, according to multiple sources aware of the development. The move signals the German carmaker’s intent to enter the heart of India’s fastest-growing passenger vehicle segment and significantly expand its volume play.

The upcoming model is expected to be positioned below the recently-updated Volkswagen Taigun midsize SUV and will directly take on entrenched rivals such as the Tata Nexon (₹7.3–14 lakh, ex-showroom), Maruti Suzuki Brezza (₹8.2–13 lakh, ex-showroom), and Hyundai Venue (₹7.9–15.5 lakh, ex-showroom). It is also expected to rival Honda’s upcoming sub-Elevate SUV, which is yet to be launched.

Sources said Volkswagen’s new SUV will be based on the same platform that underpins the Kylaq, highlighting synergies within the Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 strategy. The vehicle is expected to be offered with petrol powertrains initially, likely shared with the Kylaq, though final specifications are still being worked out

“The product is being positioned as an entry point into the Volkswagen SUV lineup and will be among the most affordable SUVs for the brand globally,” said a source familiar with the matter, adding, “It will be based on the Skoda Kylaq platform and is estimated to be priced in the range of ₹8.5 lakh–₹10.5 lakh.”

Cracking the volume code

If priced as planned, the vehicle could become one of the most affordable SUVs in Volkswagen’s global portfolio, reflecting a strategic pivot towards localisation and scale. At present, Volkswagen India’s portfolio spans models such as the Volkswagen Virtus and the Taigun, both developed under the India 2.0 programme, alongside premium imports like the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Historically, the brand’s most accessible product was the Volkswagen Polo, which was introduced in 2010 at a starting price of around ₹4.5 lakh (ex-showroom) and remained a key volume driver until it was phased out in 2022.

Responding to queries on entering the sub-4 metre SUV space, Nitin Kohli, MD, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, maintained that segment is largely volume-driven and contributes significantly to the overall SUV market.

“It all depends on the brand strategy. If you look back, the idea was to first bring in FBUs (Fully Built units), test the waters, and build capabilities. That was followed by localisation under the India 2.0 programme. Our current strategy is focused on driving volumes through India 2.0 products,” he said. On the possibility of introducing a sub-4 metre SUV, Kohli added that the company continues to evaluate multiple segments, markets, and powertrains, and will announce plans at an appropriate time.

The timing of the move is significant. In FY2024-25, the compact SUV segment (including those which are slightly above four metres), clocked sales of around 1.38 million units, making it the single largest contributor to India’s passenger vehicle market. The segment now accounts for over 30% of total PV sales and more than 40% of overall SUV volumes, underlining its centrality to automakers’ growth strategies.

Within the segment, competition remains intense. The Nexon continues to lead with nearly 1.96 lakh units annually, followed by strong performances from models such as Hyundai’s Creta and Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, both of which have crossed the one lakh unit mark, reflecting sustained demand across price bands.

Leveraging group synergies for cost play

The Skoda Kylaq, launched in India in 2025, marked Skoda Auto India’s entry into the subcompact SUV segment, with prices starting at around ₹7.9 lakh (ex-showroom). Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, it is a highly localised, cost-competitive model tailored for emerging markets. Around 50,000 units of the aforesaid model is produced in the country till January this year.

Like the Kylaq, the upcoming SUV is expected to be manufactured at the company’s Chakan facility in Pune, further aiding localisation and cost efficiencies. “The vehicle is expected to be offered with petrol powertrains initially, likely shared with the Kylaq, though final specifications are still being worked out,” revealed one of the sources quoted above.

Importantly, the SUV is slated for a global debut in India, reinforcing the country’s growing role as a development and manufacturing hub for cost-competitive vehicles. The company is also evaluating a potential showcase at the Auto Expo 2027, although timelines remain under discussion.

The development comes amid intensifying competition in the sub-₹10 lakh SUV category, where automakers are targeting first-time buyers and upgraders with feature-rich offerings.

“Volkswagen’s move to enter the sub-₹10 lakh SUV segment reflects a clear recognition of where demand is concentrated in India. An India-first global product at this price point could significantly improve its scale and relevance, provided it balances cost with brand expectations,” said Puneet Gupta, Director at S&P Global Mobility.

For Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, which sold a little over 43,000 units in calendar year 2025—translating into a market share of around 1% in the domestic passenger vehicle space—the new SUV could be pivotal in scaling up volumes, according to Gupta.

German carmaker is working on a pipeline of 3–4 new models and product interventions over the medium term as part of its India strategy. With a sharper focus on localisation and entry-level segments, Volkswagen is targeting a market share of 2–3% by 2030.
