SAIC Motor-backed JSW MG Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) have eaten into the market share of India’s largest electric carmaker, Tata Motors , in April.
Tata Motors ' electric vehicle sales fell 11% year-on-year to 4,415 units in April, bringing down Tata’s EV market share to 36% in April, according to data sourced from the government's VAHAN portal. For the financial year 2024-25, Tata Motors' EV market share fell to 53% from over 70% in FY24 as the Tata Group company faced tough competition from JSW MG Motor India.
Riding on the success of MG Windsor EV, which has become the country’s top-selling EV, JSW MG Motor India saw its EV market share rise to 28% in April. The automaker sold 3,462 EVs last month.
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which recently rolled out its two “ born electric” EVs — BE 6 and XEV 9 — saw a significant jump in market share last month. The Mumbai-based carmaker sold 2,979 EVs, clocking a market share of 24%.
South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor India stood fourth in the pecking order with 5.5% market share in EVs, thanks to its recently launched Creta EV.
Chinese carmaker BYD accounted for 3% market share, followed by luxury carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
April wholesales remain muted
Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales—shipments from the factory shop floor to dealerships—of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd remained flat at 138,704 units in April 2025 compared with 137,952 in the corresponding month last year.
Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) recorded domestic wholesales of 44,374 units in April 2025, a decline of 11.6% compared with 50,201 units in April 2024. “While the domestic market continues to face headwinds on account of various macro-economic factors, we continue to champion 'Make in India, Made for the World' emphasising HMIL’s strong focus on exports. This has resulted in a robust 21.5% YoY growth in export volumes in April 2025,” said Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, HMIL.
Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle wholesales fell 6% year-on-year to 45,199 units in April.
Bucking the industry trend, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) announced wholesales of 52,330 utility vehicles in the domestic market, a growth of 28%.
JSW MG Motor India recorded wholesales of 5,829 units in April, clocking a year-on-year growth of 23% over April 2024. “Since its launch, the Windsor EV has solidified its position as the best-selling EV for seven consecutive months,” the carmaker said in a statement.
