Twitter chief executive officer Parag Agrawal on Tuesday said that Elon Musk has been appointed as a board member of the microblogging platform.

Musk is a passionate believer and intense critic of the service which is exactly what we need on Twitter, and in the boardroom, to make us stronger in the long-term, Twitter CEO tweeted welcoming the Tesla chief.

"Through conversations with Elon in recent weeks, it became clear to us that he would bring great value to our Board," said Agrawal.

Commenting on the appointment, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey said, "I'm really happy Elon is joining the Twitter board! He cares deeply about our world and Twitter's role in it. Parag and Elon both lead with their hearts, and they will be an incredible team."

Earlier in the day, Musk had asked users whether they want an edit button on Twitter. Replying to his tweet, Agrawal wrote, "The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully." A significant majority of users have voted "yse".

The announcement comes a day after Musk acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter, making him the largest shareholder of the microblogging platform.

The world's richest person bought nearly 73.5 million shares, according to a document filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Musk's shareholding is more than four times the 2.25% stake held by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.

Last month, Musk conducted a Twitter poll asking users if they believed Twitter rigorously adheres to free speech which is essential to a functioning democracy. Over 70% of users said 'no', the poll showed.

"The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully," Musk had tweeted last month.

The SpaceX founder then asked his followers what should be done given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy.

In another tweet, Musk asked: "Is a new platform needed?" The tweet has over 331,000 likes.
