J.P. Morgan has been mauled in the past year. First, it paid over $2 billion for failing to spot Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, conducted mostly via the bank’s accounts. Then, it settled another $13 billion over charges of selling mortgage- backed securities before the 2008 financial crisis. Its Asia business, of which India is a big chunk, was not left unscathed. It fell to 13 from 6 on Mergermarket’s rankings of 15 outfits by M&A deal value. Within J.P. Morgan, Asia’s share in global M&As reduced to 16%, from 20% in 2010. Economic slowdown and policy paralysis in India added to its woes. But Morparia has held on. She helped Reliance Communications raise $800 million in a share sale and mediated a sharebacked financing of $150 million for Adani Enterprises, among other deals. A respected face in financial circles, she expects this year to be better.
