Mazumdar-Shaw faced rough weather last year amid regulatory uncertainties. Almost all clinical trials in India were halted by the government and trial approvals put on hold. A price ceiling formula for ‘essential medicines’ created further confusion. But Biocon’s numbers remained robust, with revenue growth at 18% and Ebitda and PAT margins at 23% and 20%, respectively. Research service revenue in the U.S. crossed $100 million (Rs 612 crore) for the first time. The company continued its innovation push with Alzumab, a biologic (drug made from natural resources as opposed to chemicals) to treat psoriasis, a chronic skin condition.
