Under Hilton, Shell India, which has invested over $1 billion here, has also grown its headcount of scientists and engineers to 900. India is one of the top 10 markets for the global energy and petrochemicals giant—that’s a significant claim given that the conglomerate operates in some 70 countries. Its shared business services centre in Chennai has grown too and now employs over 2,000 people, 95% of whom are Indians. (In all, Shell India employs over 3,300, and another 150 are employed by joint-venture units in which Shell has controlling interest.) Meanwhile, Shell is in the process of further investing in the expansion of the Hazira LNG Terminal in Gujarat. Its capacity is currently fully booked. The Andhra Pradesh government has invited Shell to participate in setting up a 5 mtpa floating LNG storage and regasification unit on the east coast of the Kakinada deepwater port. She’s now pressing for key reforms in the country, such as inclusion of petroleum products in the anticipated goods and services tax, deregulation of diesel, removal of excise duty on branded fuels, and creation of a levelplaying field between private and public sector energy companies. For Hilton, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
