Last year wasn’t particularly kind to banks in India, and ICICI Bank didn’t escape by virtue of being the country’s largest private bank. Bludgeoned by rising nonperforming assets, a slowing economy, and stagnating corporate growth, ICICI Bank’s standalone profits grew by a meagre 1%, with operating profits growing by 11%. Seen against the overall gloom, such a minuscule improvement is still cause for cheer. Kochhar, meanwhile, is focussing on improving the technologies the bank adopts.
