The past year has been a vindication of sorts for Mazumdar-Shaw, who has often chided analysts and critics for taking a short-term view of her business. Biocon’s market capitalisation has more than doubled to Rs 18,500 crore, and it has created additional value by listing subsidiary Syngene, now worth over Rs 9,500 crore. Biocon became the first Indian company to launch a biologic drug in Japan. Biologic drugs are made in a living system such as plants or animal cells. Its tie-up with Mylan to take over half-a-dozen biologic products to the U.S. and Europe is also on track, with several regulatory filings expected in FY17.
