With just 11% of the market tapped, running a personal computer (PC) business in the age of tablets is easier here than anywhere else. But profitability is harder in a country where state governments give away laptops and, therefore, drive a hard bargain while buying them in bulk. Though Katyal has opted for profits over market share, his hardsell has lifted Lenovo’s share from 10% in 2012 to 17% last year, at the cost of HP and Dell.
