Vaidyan was the first woman to be appointed CMD of GIC Re. Her ability to sell reinsurance products on GIC Syndicate 1947—a fully Indian capitalbacked syndicate of Lloyd’s of London—was the company’s biggest achievement last year. The platform allows it to bypass the sovereign rating hurdle in accessing global business, particularly in the U.S. While she retired in July, under her watch, GIC Re became the largest agricultural reinsurer in the world; in FY19, the company accounted for 60% of crop insurance in India.
