Until just two years ago, Kapoor’s name was synonymous with sitcoms on Indian television channels. But, slowly and steadily, she is making her presence felt on India’s formidable video-streaming or over-the-top (OTT) platform. Last year, her OTT platform ALTBalaji garnered close to 20 million paid subscribers, a big jump over the previous year. It drew subscriptions by building a loyal customer base by keeping prices low and courting viewers outside the big cities. Launched in 2017, ALTBalaji has consistently managed to stay in the top percentile in a crowded market with more than 30 OTT players including Disney’s Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Eros Now, ZEE5, Viacom 18’s Voot, Sony’s Liv, and the Times group’s MX Player. ALTBalaji aimed to break even within 36-48 months of launch, which according to the company is on track. And it is set to turn profitable soon, thanks to a collaboration it announced recently with ZEE5 to co-create original content that would be available on both platforms.
