A year into its launch, video-on-demand platform ALTBalaji, a subsidiary of Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, has racked up one million subscribers and counting. It has a library of 250 hours of fresh content. Though the net profit of Balaji Telefilms fell nearly 50% in the past financial year, ALTBalaji’s success keeps her in good stead. The edge ALTBalaji has over other platforms such as Netflix and Hotstar, which cater to a more urban audience, is that its content is mainly focussed on viewers in rural India, where the next phase of growth in mobile Internet is expected.
