Desi Originals Make it Big on Netflix
Monika Shergill,Vice President, Content, Netflix India
Netflix had one of the best years in 2020, when it added 36 million subscribers. As the world went into a lockdown, streaming platforms became the only source of entertainment. Monica Shergill, vice president, content, Netflix India, is proud that Indian shows such as 'AK versus AK' and 'Haseen Dillruba' did well on the global stage. "'Haseen Dillruba' became popular in 22 countries, while 'AK versus AK' became popular in 40-odd countries," she proudly declares. Shergill, who has had a long innings in linear TV at Viacom, Star and Sony, says a key part of her journey at Netflix in the past two years has been to make her global team understand the value of stories from India. At a time when the streaming service provider is going out of its way to bring diversity in its story-telling, Shergill believes diversity comes naturally to Indians. "In India, diversity is organic. We come from different cultural backgrounds and speak different languages. We also do programming in a variety of languages."
