Despite the billions of money earned from business deals and having a financial business-focussed empire, a spiritually inclined Swati Piramal, vice chairperson, Piramal group, and her husband Ajay Piramal, chairman, have a different outlook towards life. "We are just trustees of money for the people around you and in this world. Business and money should be a force for good and the impact you can make on lives," says Swati, referring to the work Piramal Foundation is doing in education and health in 120-plus backward districts, mainly in remote and tribal areas, in 24 states. She was among the leading faces of India's drug discovery plans until a decade ago. An MBBS doctor, scientist and a public health expert, she built a new drug discovery centre for Piramal Healthcare in the early 2000s right from scratch. However, it was shut down soon after Piramal sold its formulation business to Abbott for $3.72 billion.
